The wonder of me!

Have you ever taken a good look at yourself lately? What do you see in the mirror?

I mean take a real good look at how we are made and constructed. I suppose the human body has been a fascination for many doctors and scientists over the years. We may be familiar with the story of Frankenstein and his quest to bring a monster constructed of different body parts back to life. But what is life? How is life defined? Where does it come from? It is one of the world’s greatest mysteries, and science cannot tell you the answer, and all the resources of the world cannot solve this mystery.

We all want to live a long life, free of disease and pain. Some have even placed their bodies into deep freeze in the hope that in the future it will be possible to cure their ailments and bring them back to life.    
 

What does the bible say?

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb.
I'll praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well. ” (Psalm 139:13-14)

David also wondered about his origins, and after much thought penned these words in Psalm 139. He didn't look to science, and man's theories, but looked to the creator God. We are the magnificent workmanship of God’s own hand. These words are a clear summary of the stunning complexity of the human body that God has created. Our bodies are made of billions of cells and a myriad of parts that can only be adequately explained by a loving and wise Creator and the chief designer.


We are told in the beginning, that the triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, conversed and decided to make man. “Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” (Genesis 1:26)


We are created mind, body and spirit. We are different from the rest of creation for we are made in God's own image. The bible is very detailed and clear that we are different from the rest of creation. Deep down we know that we are different. Why is it that there are religions in the world? What makes us reach out from ourselves, and makes us believe there is a higher life form out there somewhere? Well, it’s in our DNA. it's imprinted in our very being. David says his “soul knows it very well.” This is true of us if we open our hearts and minds to it. We are all made in the image of God.  


In this verse from the Psalms, David also gives an indication of our value, or worth from God's point of view. A lot of care and consideration is involved in the creation and makeup of each single human being. We all have different body shapes, sizes, intellect, and personalities. We are all different but made in the same mould!


Look at what David goes on to say in the Psalm, "My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them."


This raises the fact that we were known by God way before any human interaction and conception.  He even knows the number of our appointed days. He plans the day of our birth and our death. Nothing happens by chance or fate. God is the source of all life, and in him resides all power.

Consider our Creator

I remember the birth of each of my children. It was a wonder to me. Consider our Creator who threads together a multitude of veins, vessels, and arteries, sinews, and bones, pumping life into something as simple as a newborn baby. It’s a complete mystery to me how anyone can say life ever happened by mere chance. For example, just take the human eye. How each separate part combines and works together to complete a picture that is interpreted by the brain.  How could each part ever evolve and combine to form the eye? It speaks of a greater designer, God. Think of the various organs in the body, each with their own specific task, but they serve the whole body! How did that happen? And what about thought, and reason?   


In the Old Testament, God questioned the knowledge of Job “Who has put wisdom in the inward parts or given understanding to the mind? “(Job 38:36) It was a rhetorical question to force Job to think. The answer, of course, is God!  Only He knows each person at the most minute and intimate level. And these verses must cause us to turn, and evaluate ourselves, especially if we feel unloved, or not wanted in any shape or form. Because from God's point of view we are special in his sight. He knows each and every one of us intimately, lovingly, as any father loves his children. He cares for you even if you think if no-one else does. And knowing this gives us peace within, well-being and belonging.    


Finally, these verses provide us with a very good reason why we should worship the Lord God, as revealed to us in our bibles. It turns the focus away from ourselves, me, and sets it on God alone. “I'll praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” This praise of thanks is also echoed in the book of Revelation “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for you created all things, and by your will, they existed and were created.” (Rev 4:11)
